The Necropolis of St Peter's

After years of restoration and ongoing excavations, the necropolis hidden below St Peter's Basilica reopens to the public. Built on the site of Nero's circus, finding a resting place in the cemetery next to St Peter was a very big deal. Visitors can now see these new-found, ancient graves at close quarters and admire the incredible series of early Christian frescoes. Applications for visits must be made in writing at least 20 days before the proposed visit, stating the number of people in the group and the day and language preferred.

An artists' publication detailing inspirations and sources has been published to coincide with the exhibition.

Le Pain Quotidien

Situated in the heart of the city centre, this new eatery has quickly become popular with office-workers and shoppers alike. Apart from operating an enviable take-away service, Le Pain Quotidien offers a good continental breakfast, a pleasingly demanding weekend brunch menu and desserts, from brownies to panna cotta. Judging by the numbers, most punters wisely opt for one of the lunchtime specials - excellent salads with mineral water and freshly baked bread thrown into the bargain. Surroundings are slick but not off-putting.

Christmas Revels

This is as much a New England tradition as the Red Sox losing the Pennant race. 'The Christmas Revels' is a multimedia, interactive family celebration of the Winter solstice that brings together holiday traditions from around the world into an evening of music, singing, dancing, drama and pageantry - that generally ends with the audience singing and dancing in the aisles. The 30th anniversary production features Appalachian songs and folk tales, as well as shape note hymns, gospel music and a mountain mummers play.
