Squirrel Nut Zippers

Squirrel Nut Zippers are one of the few bands to survive the ebb in the swing craze. One of the biggest acts in the retro swing and big band fad of the 1990s, the Zippers are back on tour with their new album, playing a lot more than their nostalgia-laden, horn-driven sound. Frontman Jim Mathus stated 'I think swing is part of our sound but it's not what we are. A lot of our music is too fast and too weird for swing dancing'. 'Bedlam Ballroom' runs the gamut from melancholy crooning to crazed country-tinged jams.

The Grandmothers

Jimmy Carl Black, Don Preston and Bunk Gardner may not be household names themselves, but the other guy they used to be in a band with was pretty well known. His name was Frank Zappa, the band was called the Mothers of Invention. Together they broke all kinds of new ground when they were at their peak. Zappa's passed on, but Black, Preston and Gardner are back together and performing with a full backing band under the rather humorous moniker the Grandmothers. Their new album is called 'Twistin at the Astoria'.
